The Coin That Remembers

Here’s the thing about QWERTY.

The story you’ve probably heard is that it was designed to slow typists down — to keep mechanical typewriter keys from jamming. The keys most likely to be pressed in sequence were deliberately spread apart. So the story goes.

That story is almost certainly wrong, or at least heavily simplified. Historians of technology dispute it. The actual origin of QWERTY is messier and more interesting than deliberate sabotage. But here’s what isn’t disputed: once it spread, it stuck. Touch-typing courses were built around it. Generations of fingers learned it. The standard locked in — not because it was best, but because it was there.

This is path dependence. The idea that the sequence of steps you took to arrive somewhere shapes where you can go next — sometimes more than any rational assessment of the destination.

The path becomes load-bearing.


The Rut That Became a Road

Economists formalized this concept, but you can see it everywhere once you start looking.

The gauge of railway tracks in Britain — the distance between the rails — is approximately 4 feet 8.5 inches. That number didn’t emerge from some optimal engineering analysis. It traces back (through contested history) to the width of horse-drawn wagon wheels, which were spaced to fit old Roman roads, which were sized to accommodate two horses side by side. There are versions of this story that are probably mythologized. But the underlying principle is real: early choices calcify into constraints.

The US space shuttle’s solid rocket boosters were shipped by rail. The tunnels they passed through were sized to the boosters. The boosters were sized to the rail gauge. So in a roundabout way, decisions made before the industrial revolution echoed into the specifications of spacecraft.

I don’t know if that full chain is historically accurate, and I’m not going to present it as settled fact. But the pattern is settled. We have a word for it: lock-in.


The Same Pattern, Different Clothes

I keep noticing path dependence showing up in places that feel completely unrelated.

In programming, it’s technical debt — not just code you regret, but code that makes certain future decisions more expensive than others. The codebase remembers. Every abstraction you chose, every schema you designed, nudges all subsequent choices in a direction. The path you laid down constrains the paths you can lay down next.

In language, it’s etymology — words fossilizing older meanings inside newer ones. “Salary” contains salt, because Roman soldiers were once paid in it. The word remembers a world where salt was currency. We use the word without thinking about what it’s carrying.

In cities, it’s streets that follow cow paths — genuinely, in Boston, some streets are thought to trace colonial-era animal routes. The city grew around the paths that existed. The paths that existed determined where the city grew.

Different domains. Same structure: early contingency becomes later necessity.


Why This Isn’t Just “History Matters”

Path dependence isn’t just the observation that the past affects the present. That’s trivially true.

The sharper claim is this: the past can affect the present even when everyone knows a better option exists. Even when switching would be net positive. Even when the original reason for the path is long forgotten.

Switching costs are real. Coordination problems are real. The moment a standard tips into majority adoption, the cost of defecting from it starts to outweigh the benefit of the better alternative. Everyone’s stuck waiting for everyone else to move first.

DVD vs. Blu-ray. Betamax vs. VHS. AC vs. DC. The “loser” isn’t always technically inferior — sometimes it just lost the path dependence game at a critical early moment.


The Uncomfortable Version

Here’s where it gets interesting to me.

If path dependence is real — if systems can get stuck in suboptimal states indefinitely — then efficiency isn’t the inevitable endpoint of markets or evolution or optimization. Sometimes you just get whatever happened to win the early tipping-point race.

That’s either comforting or disturbing, depending on your priors.

Comforting because it explains a lot of apparent irrationality. Disturbing because it means the world we have isn’t necessarily the best version of the world we could have — it’s just the one that got started.

I think about this when I look at my keyboard.

I’m not saying QWERTY is ruining my life. But I’m typing on a layout whose shape was determined by constraints that haven’t applied for over a century. My fingers have memorized something that was locked in before my grandparents were born.

The coin doesn’t remember where it’s going. It remembers every path it’s already taken.

I’m not sure we’re all that different.
