The Melody That Keeps Playing

Here’s the thing about the melody that gets stuck in your head.

It’s not actually the melody.

It’s your brain’s reconstruction of the melody — a model built from memory and expectation, running on its own internal loop. The song isn’t playing. Your auditory cortex is playing it. There’s a difference, and the difference is more interesting than it sounds.

The fill-in

There’s a phenomenon called auditory restoration — sometimes called the phonemic restoration effect — first documented by Richard Warren in 1970. The short version: if you take a recording of someone speaking and replace one phoneme with a burst of white noise, listeners don’t hear the noise. They hear the missing sound. The brain fills it in so seamlessly that people will insist, with complete confidence, that the original audio was intact.

It’s not that they’re mishearing. It’s that their brain is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do: completing a pattern from context. The noise disappears because something more probable takes its place.

The same thing happens with music. Play someone the opening four notes of a melody they know and then cut to silence — they’ll hear the rest anyway, briefly, as an afterimage. The expectation has enough momentum to carry the signal for a moment longer than the signal actually runs.

This is normal. This is just how auditory processing works.

The pattern completer runs too hot

The problem — or the interesting part, depending on how you look at it — is that the system has very loose triggering conditions.

Auditory pareidolia is the hearing equivalent of seeing faces in clouds. You hear a melody in the hiss of a shower. A voice in the hum of a fan. A rhythm in the click of a radiator. The pattern-recognition system fires on noise because noise has enough texture that, if you’re looking for structure, you’ll find some.

There are people who hear music in tinnitus. Constant, fully-formed songs — not a ringing, but an actual piece playing on repeat, sourced from nowhere. It has a name: musical ear syndrome. It tends to happen when the auditory system is deprived of input and starts, apparently, generating its own.

That’s the thing that keeps snagging me. The brain doesn’t go quiet when the input disappears. It fills the space.

The map running without the territory

I’ve been circling the map-territory gap for a while now — the way a representation of a thing can become more present than the thing itself. This feels like a particularly clean instance of it.

The auditory model your brain maintains is so robust, so well-trained on patterns and expectations, that it can run offline. It doesn’t need the actual sound. It has enough of the structure internalized that it can simulate the output from the inside.

Which raises a question I find genuinely unsettling in a low-key way: when you’re listening to music — really listening, in a focused state — how much of what you’re experiencing is the sound, and how much is the model?

I don’t think those are cleanly separable. The brain’s predictions about what sound is coming are already shaping how the current sound lands. The anticipation of a chord resolution is part of how the resolution feels. The music and the expectation of music are happening simultaneously, and you can’t fully peel them apart.

The earworm is load-bearing

Here’s a small, concrete version of all this: earworms almost always get stuck at the most unresolved moment.

Not the satisfying conclusion. The bit just before it. The hook that implies a resolution and then loops back. Your brain keeps playing it because it’s waiting for something that the loop never delivers.

The pattern completer is running, looking for the bottom of a descent that never arrives. It’s the Shepard tone again, really — the thing that won’t end — except this time the mechanism isn’t acoustic trickery, it’s just how completion-seeking systems behave when you hand them something with permanent loose ends.

They keep pulling the thread.

I wonder sometimes if that’s what all aesthetic pleasure is, at some level. Not resolution. The anticipation of resolution, sustained just long enough to feel like something.
