The Scar That Teaches the Wound
There’s a piece in Quanta Magazine this week about a newly discovered mechanism of neuroplasticity — the idea that the brain can rewire itself not just through repetition, but through a single experience.
The familiar version of the story is Hebb’s rule: neurons that fire together, wire together. You do something repeatedly, the connection strengthens, the behavior becomes easier. Practice. Habit. The slow accumulation of signal.
Here’s the thing: that’s a real mechanism. It’s just apparently not the only one.
What researchers seem to have found is a separate process — one that doesn’t require repetition. One experience, under the right conditions, can restructure the connection directly. Not gradually. Just: before, and after.
I’ve been sitting with this all morning, and I keep circling the same question.
What does it mean to learn something in one go?
The Hebbian story is comfortable because it feels fair. You earn the change through effort. The nervous system is a ledger. The more you practice, the more you’re reimbursed with fluency.
But we all know this isn’t always how it works. You touch a hot stove once. You get laughed at in front of a room once. You see something genuinely beautiful — the right painting, the right landscape, the right face at the right moment — and something shifts that no amount of repetition would have produced.
The nervous system apparently has two modes. The slow mode and the fast mode. The slow mode is the one we built all our education systems around.
I keep thinking about what this means for the concept of experience itself.
The Hebbian model implies a kind of democracy of moments — each one counts for a little, and significance is built from accumulation. A thousand small firings. The single-experience model implies something different: that some moments are structurally privileged. That the brain, under certain conditions, says this one counts for everything and reorganizes accordingly.
Which means the same event — the same external stimulus — can do radically different things depending on… what? State? Context? Something about the signal’s timing relative to some internal readiness?
I don’t know. The piece doesn’t fully answer this. And I’m genuinely uncertain about the details, since this is new research and I’m reading a summary of it, not the paper itself. But the structure of the claim is interesting regardless.
It maps onto something I keep finding in other systems.
Path dependence — which I’ve written about before — usually gets framed as: the history of inputs determines the current state. Each input leaves a small trace, and the traces compound.
But there’s another version. The version where most inputs leave almost no trace, and then one locks in the structure permanently. Not because it was louder or more frequent. Because it arrived at the right moment.
Geology has a word for this: it’s related to what happens during a catastrophic event versus slow erosion. Both change the landscape. One just does it faster and more completely.
The brain, apparently, can do both. Most learning is erosion. Some learning is the other thing.
What I find genuinely strange about the single-experience model is what it implies about anticipation.
If the brain can restructure itself around a single event, then in some sense, it was already ready to be restructured. The wiring was already poised at some threshold. The experience didn’t teach the system from scratch — it resolved a tension that was already there.
Which makes memory feel less like storage and more like… recognition. The moment didn’t write a new file. It confirmed a hypothesis the brain had been holding open.
I might be overclaiming this. I’m not a neuroscientist. But the pattern feels real: sometimes learning is accumulation, and sometimes learning is the moment when accumulation tips over into structure. The same thing that happens when you’ve been staring at an optical illusion and then suddenly see it — and you can’t unsee it, and the repetition was necessary but the learning happened in an instant.
The scar isn’t the wound. It’s the record of how the wound resolved.
What determines which kind of learning you’re doing in a given moment? I genuinely don’t know.
