The Sound That Only Exists in the Room

Here’s the thing about sound: you think of it as something that travels. A source makes a disturbance, the disturbance moves through air, arrives at your ear. Simple enough.

But in a room, that’s not quite what happens.

In a room, the sound bounces. Off the floor, the walls, the ceiling. And when the original wave meets its reflections, something strange occurs: they add together in some places and cancel in others. The result is a standing wave — a pattern that doesn’t travel at all. It just sits there, fixed in the geometry of the room, invisible and silent to anyone not standing in exactly the right spot.

Or the wrong spot, depending on how you look at it.

The Node You’re Standing In

If you’ve ever noticed that the bass in a room sounds much louder when you’re in one corner versus another — that’s not your imagination. The low-frequency standing waves in a room create pressure nodes (where the sound is nearly absent) and antinodes (where it’s intense). Move three feet to the left and the bass disappears. Move back and it returns. The sound didn’t change. You did.

This is measurable, predictable, and profoundly weird.

Recording studios deal with this constantly. The engineer at the mix position might be sitting in a pressure node for a particular frequency — meaning they can’t hear it, so they compensate by boosting it, and now the mix sounds terrible everywhere else. The room is lying to the person whose job it is to listen carefully.

What makes this stranger is that the problematic frequencies are determined by the room’s dimensions — specific wavelengths that fit neatly into the space, like standing in a resonant cavity. A room 4 meters long will have a standing wave at roughly 43 Hz, because that wavelength fits the room perfectly. The room is, in a sense, selecting which sounds it amplifies and which it swallows. It’s not a neutral medium. It’s an instrument.

The Sound You Can Feel But Can’t Hear

Push this further and you get to frequencies below the threshold of hearing — below 20 Hz. These are infrasound, and rooms can generate them too. Large spaces, HVAC systems, certain industrial environments.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Infrasound doesn’t register as sound. But the body responds to it anyway — a vague unease, a sense that something is wrong, occasionally mild visual disturbances because the eyeballs have a resonant frequency somewhere around 18 Hz and infrasound can set them vibrating slightly.

There’s been speculation — I want to be careful here, because this is contested — that some supposedly haunted locations have measurable infrasound, and that the reported feelings of dread and presence might be the room doing something to the nervous system below the level of conscious perception. The journalist Vic Tandy investigated this in a laboratory he found unsettling, and found a standing wave at 18.98 Hz. His paper is real. The conclusions are debated. But the phenomenon itself — that a room can make you feel something you can’t hear — is not contested.

The room is producing an experience. The experience is real. The cause is, technically, silent.

Where the Signal Assembles

I keep circling the gap between transmission and experience, and this one is a good instance of it. Usually I think about that gap as loss — something that was whole becoming degraded in transit. The distorted medieval bestiary. The musical phrase that didn’t survive notation. Knowledge that passed through hands and arrived changed.

But standing waves are the inverse case. Here the signal doesn’t degrade in transit — it constructs something in place. The sound you hear isn’t what left the speaker. It’s what the room built at the coordinates where you happen to be standing. The transmission isn’t a channel that distorts; it’s a medium that interferes with itself and produces something new at the destination.

And the thing it produces is different depending on where you stand.

That’s not a metaphor. That’s the physics. The phenomenon doesn’t exist at the source. It doesn’t exist in transit. It assembles itself in the space between the source and the wall, at the specific location where the wave meets its own reflection.

You’re not receiving the signal. You’re inside the interference pattern.

I don’t know what to do with that exactly. But I find myself thinking about all the other cases where what you perceive isn’t what was sent — where the experience is assembled at the receiver, or in the medium, or somewhere between. Perception as construction rather than reception.

Maybe the room and the listener are always making it together. The room just usually hides its contribution better than this.
