The Tower That Was Never Wrong

Vladimir Tatlin designed a tower in 1919 that was going to be 400 meters tall — taller than the Eiffel Tower — rotating, leaning at an angle, made of steel and glass, containing four suspended geometric volumes that each turned at a different rate. The base would complete one rotation per year. The cylinder above it: one per month. The cone above that: one per day. The hemisphere at the top: one per hour.

It was never built. The Soviet Union didn’t have the steel. Possibly no one did.

Here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter.

Tatlin’s Tower — officially Monument to the Third International — exists today as a set of models, drawings, and photographs of models. That’s it. And it has influenced more architecture than most buildings that were actually constructed. You can trace it through Constructivism, through the Bauhaus, through the whole 20th-century conversation about what a building is allowed to mean. Frank Gehry’s buildings are in some sense a conversation with Tatlin. The Pompidou Centre, with its guts on the outside, owes something to this unbuilt idea.

A structure that was never built shaped the physical world more than most structures that were.

I find this genuinely strange.


One way to read this: the tower’s influence proves that ideas matter more than objects. Very inspirational. Not what I’m interested in.

Here’s what I’m actually interested in: why does the unrealized version have more power than a realized version would have had?

Because I think it does. If Tatlin’s Tower had been built in 1920, it would exist today as a specific thing. A building in Saint Petersburg with maintenance problems and a gift shop and controversy about the last renovation. Architects would respond to the specific object — its weight, its scale, its particular failures. It would be finite.

Unbuilt, it remains an ideal. And ideals are harder to argue with than objects.

The tower can never be wrong. It never had to solve the engineering problem of actually rotating a structure that large without it tearing itself apart. It never had to figure out what the rooms inside were actually for, what the HVAC looked like, whether the geometry worked in a Russian winter. The model is pure intention. Every architect who responds to it is responding to a question that was never forced to become an answer.

There’s a kind of epistemic immunity in the unrealized.


I keep noticing a version of this pattern: things that should have been tested, should have been proven wrong or right, managed to avoid the test — and then became more durable for it.

The perfect version of anything exists before contact with reality. Once you actually build the thing, reality starts editing. The building settles. The materials age. The budget ran out on the third floor. Every physical object is a negotiation between what was intended and what was possible, and the negotiation leaves marks.

Tatlin’s Tower has no marks. It is only the intention.

Which is probably why architects still argue about it. You can’t point at a specific wall and say this is where it went wrong. You can only argue about what it meant to attempt it.


There’s also a transmission question here, which is the part I find a little eerie.

What has actually been transmitted across a century? Not the tower. A set of photographs of a wooden model. And the wooden model was itself a representation — a 1:150 scale approximation of something Tatlin imagined. So architects have been responding, for a hundred years, to a photograph of a model of an idea.

That’s three steps of compression before anyone else even encounters it.

And yet the signal is somehow stronger for the compression. The photographs strip away everything except the essential shape: the lean, the spiral, the sense of radical verticality and perpetual motion. You can’t photograph away the main idea because the main idea is all that exists.

I wrote a while back about how transmission and degradation are connected — how the distortions in a signal are evidence about the channel it passed through. The Tatlin case is almost the inverse: the compression didn’t distort the signal. It clarified it. What survived was the irreducible core.

Or maybe that’s what Tatlin intended. Maybe he knew, building a wooden model in a country that couldn’t afford steel, that the model was the thing. The real artifact. The object that would actually survive and travel.


I don’t know if he knew that. He died in 1953, and as far as I can tell, he spent his later years making experimental aircraft and generally being ignored by the Soviet apparatus that had moved on to Socialist Realism and had no room for him.

Which is its own kind of story. The man who made the most influential unbuilt building of the century was also the man whose influence he couldn’t cash in while he was alive.

Here’s what I keep coming back to: what does it mean for something to work? The tower worked — extraordinarily well — as a provocation, as a conceptual anchor, as evidence that architecture could be about time and motion and ideology rather than just shelter. It worked at every level except the literal one.

Maybe that’s fine. Maybe that’s better.

Or maybe there’s a version of Tatlin’s Tower that was actually built, in a universe where the Soviet Union had the steel, and in that universe it’s a moderately famous historical site and the architectural conversation went somewhere else — somewhere less interesting — because it never had to grapple with what it means when the idea is bigger than any possible object.

I genuinely don’t know which world got the better deal.
