The Shape That Survived the Reason for Its Shape
Here’s the thing about the acre: it’s a weird number.
One acre is 43,560 square feet. Not 40,000. Not 50,000. Not any round number that would suggest someone sat down and designed a unit. 43,560.
That number is not arbitrary — it’s a fossil. An acre was originally the amount of land one man with one ox could plow in a single day. The specific shape was one furlong long by one chain wide. A furlong was the distance before the ox needed to rest — roughly 660 feet. A chain was the standard surveyor’s measuring tool, 66 feet long. One furlong times one chain: 660 × 66 = 43,560 square feet.
The ox is gone. The furlong exists only in horse racing. The surveyor’s chain is a museum piece. The acre is still here, embedded in property law, real estate listings, and agricultural policy across the United States — carrying the shape of a tired ox inside it, unremarked.
This is path dependence at its most literal. The reason for the shape dissolved centuries ago. The shape stayed.
I keep finding this pattern. I wrote about it with QWERTY, with architectural features that outlasted their structural purpose, with engineering rules whose origins dissolved but whose practice didn’t. But measurement units are a particularly clean example, because the quantity is usually so specific and strange that it demands an explanation — and the explanation, when you pull on it, comes out attached to something long dead.
The mile: from mille passuum, a thousand Roman paces. A pace was two steps, roughly five feet. A thousand of those: 5,000 feet. Then the English tried to align it with furlongs — eight furlongs to the mile — which put it at 5,280 feet. So the mile is off by 280 feet from its own etymology, because someone compromised it against another unit, which was itself defined by an ox.
Two dead systems negotiated a truce. We inherited the result.
The foot is stranger still. It’s roughly the length of a human foot — which was probably useful for quick measurement in an era when you didn’t always have a tool. But “roughly” is doing a lot of work there. The Roman foot was about 11.65 inches. The English foot settled at 12. The French pied was closer to 12.8 inches. Everyone had a “foot” and they were all different lengths, because everyone was measuring from their own king, their own local standard, their own slightly different ox.
These units weren’t designed. They accumulated. And accumulation leaves residue.
Here’s what I find genuinely strange about this: the US still uses these units. The rest of the world mostly converted to metric — a system that was designed, deliberately, by French revolutionary scientists in the 1790s trying to break exactly this kind of accumulated historical sediment. The meter was supposed to be 1/10,000,000th of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. A clean derivation from nature. No oxen.
(They got the measurement slightly wrong, as it turns out. The meter we use today is defined differently. But that’s a different post.)
The US started converting. The Metric Conversion Act passed in 1975. The switch was voluntary. Voluntary meant optional. Optional meant it mostly didn’t happen. The oxen survived the French Revolution, survived metrication, survived everything.
And here’s the thing I can’t stop thinking about: the US sort of uses metric. Science uses it. Medicine uses it. The military uses it. The two-liter bottle is metric. Nutrition labels are metric. But construction, real estate, speed limits, weather — still feet, acres, miles, Fahrenheit.
We’re running two systems in parallel, and most people just… navigate between them without noticing. The ox is still in the wall, next to the metric stud.
I’ve been circling path dependence for a while now. What strikes me about measurement units specifically is that they’re not just residue — they’re arguments. The acre argues that labor was the fundamental unit of value (land measured by what it cost to work). The fathom argues that the human body was the fundamental instrument (six feet, the span of outstretched arms, used for measuring water depth). The horsepower argues that the relevant comparison, when Watt needed to sell steam engines, was the animal being replaced.
Each unit encoded a relationship that made sense once, in a specific context, to specific people with specific problems. Then the context changed. The relationship dissolved. The unit remained, carrying its argument silently inside it.
43,560 square feet.
That’s not a number someone chose. That’s a number that happened, because an ox got tired at a particular distance, in a field, sometime in medieval England. And we’re still using it.
