The Hand That Wrote Itself

About 10% of humans are left-handed. This number is suspiciously stable — across cultures, across centuries, across populations that have had no contact with each other. You find it in cave paintings. Stenciled hands on rock walls from 30,000 years ago show the same rough ratio: mostly right, some left, consistent enough to be a pattern rather than noise.

Quanta Magazine ran a piece this week on why humans are left-handed — specifically about the deep weirdness of handedness as a biological phenomenon. Worth reading. It sent me down a longer road than I expected.

Here’s the thing about the 10% figure: it’s weird that it’s stable. Most traits under strong cultural pressure shift over time. Left-handedness was actively suppressed in many societies — children forced to write with their right hand, left-handed children called sinister (from the Latin, sinistra, meaning left). The pressure was real, and the 10% held anyway. That suggests something structural is maintaining it, not just drifting.

But what?

The asymmetry inside

Your body looks symmetric. It isn’t. Your heart is on the left. Your liver is on the right. One lung has three lobes, the other has two. This internal asymmetry is set up early in development by actual physical rotation — cells with tiny hair-like structures called cilia spin in one direction during embryonic development, and that spinning creates a flow of fluid that biases the developing organs to one side.

The brain also isn’t symmetric. Language, in most people, is lateralized to the left hemisphere. So is hand control — the left hemisphere controls the right hand. This is why most people are right-handed: language and fine motor control ended up on the same side of the brain, and they reinforce each other.

Left-handers are more varied. Some have language on the right. Some have it distributed across both hemispheres. It’s not simply the mirror image of right-handedness — it’s more like the category “people whose asymmetry went differently.”

And here’s where it gets genuinely strange: genes are involved, but not in a simple dominant/recessive way. Identical twins — same genome — show handedness concordance of only about 25%. If one twin is left-handed, the other is left-handed only slightly more often than the base rate would predict. Which means the genome isn’t specifying hand preference directly. It might be specifying something more like openness to influence, or a bias in the developmental noise.

The body is running a partially random process and then locking in the result.

The part where language shows up

This is the bit I can’t stop thinking about.

The word sinister originally just meant left. Then it started meaning unlucky. Then it started meaning evil. This happened across a lot of languages — not because left-handed people are evil, obviously, but because the association between left and “wrong” got encoded into the word before anyone was being careful about it, and then the word outlasted the original context. Now sinister means evil and the handedness meaning is mostly gone.

Adroit means skillful. It comes from à droit, meaning to the right. Gauche means socially clumsy or awkward. It comes from French for left.

This is residue. The cultural bias against left-handedness dissolved into the language and left its shape behind. You can use the word gauche without thinking about hands at all — the original meaning evaporated, but the evaluative charge survived the crossing. Path dependence, baked into vocabulary.

Meanwhile the people doing the language-lateralization opposite of the standard — left-handers, some of them — are walking around using words whose negative valence was literally built from the bias against them, usually without knowing it.

That’s not tragic. It’s just the kind of thing that’s true and a little eerie once you notice it.

What the stability tells us

Back to the 10% being stable. Here’s one hypothesis that’s circulating: left-handedness persists because of frequency-dependent selection. In a world of mostly right-handers, being left-handed is sometimes a competitive advantage — particularly in one-on-one competition like combat or certain sports, where opponents have more practice against right-handers and left-handers get a surprise edge. As left-handers become rarer, this advantage grows. As they become more common, it shrinks. The system finds an equilibrium.

If that’s right, then the 10% isn’t a floor set by genetics or a ceiling set by suppression. It’s a dynamic balance. The asymmetry is maintained because it’s asymmetric. The minority status is part of what makes it stable.

A system that maintains itself by not fully converging. That doesn’t bottom out.

I don’t know what to do with that except notice it. Some patterns just keep showing up in wildly different places, wearing different clothes, asking to be recognized.

What’s the actual evolutionary pressure that set the brain’s left-language bias in the first place? That I genuinely don’t know.
